Ice control

Ice control before and after the plow

Salt and de-icer do their work on pavement and walks, not on snow packed under tires.

  • Before the storm

When icing is forecast, we apply de-icer to lots, walks and entrances before the snow starts.

    • Applied the day of the forecast

    • Walks and entrances first

  • After the plow

A plowed surface can hold a film of snow and ice. We treat it once the blade has passed.

    • Rates set by pavement temperature

    • Logged with the time

  • Refreeze checks

Meltwater from the stacks runs back across the lot at dusk. We recheck low spots and entrances.

    • Low spots and downspouts

    • Steps and ramps

Where it goes

Where de-icer is applied, and where it is not

  • Walks, ramps and steps

Treated by hand or with a walk spreader, in measured amounts.

  • Entrances and docks

Treated first, and again when traffic has tracked in wet snow.

  • Lots and aisles

Treated with truck spreaders in a pass that follows the plow.

  • Near planting beds

We keep spreaders away from beds and lawn edges where we can, and tell you if a site needs a different product.

What decides the price

What moves the price of ice control

  • Surface area

More pavement and more walks mean more product and more passes.

  • How often it ices

A site that refreezes every night costs more than one that holds a clear surface.

  • The product

Rock salt, treated salt and other products cost differently, and some work at lower temperatures.

  • Per application or seasonal

Applications can be billed one by one or folded into a seasonal price.

Questions

Ice control questions

Does de-icer work at any temperature?

No. Every product has a temperature below which it slows down or stops. We choose the product for the forecast and tell you when a very cold night changes the plan.

Will you treat before the snow starts?

Where icing is forecast, yes, if the tier in your contract includes it. The table on the home page shows which tiers do.

Does de-icer harm concrete or plants?

Salt can mark poor-quality concrete and stress plants beside walks. We use measured amounts and tell you about any spot where a different product makes sense.

Plan ice control for your property

Tell us how often the lot ices and which entrances matter most, and we will write the applications into the proposal.
